Greenhouse Safety

Greenhouse Safety Manual

The Greenhouse Safety Manual provides guidelines for conducting safe and successful research in university greenhouses, shade houses, and plant growth chambers.

The purpose of this manual is to detail greenhouse safety rules, hazard identification and control, housekeeping practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response, and incident and injury reporting. Greenhouses are an essential component of research and education at the University of Florida and have supported its growth into a top 5 research institution in the nation.

Greenhouse Safety Training

EH&S recommends that everyone working in the greenhouses complete EHS722: Safety Guidelines for Research Greenhouses.

Greenhouse Safety Survey

Greenhouse Safety Surveys are performed, at minimum, annually by EH&S (in conjunction with the Lab Safety Survey) to ensure greenhouses are operating safely and in accordance with the policies pertinent to the type of research conducted in the greenhouse. The visit is an opportunity for EH&S to provide educational support regarding potential safety hazards and to raise awareness of regulatory requirements. If a safety issue is observed, the surveyor will offer recommendations to aid the staff in correcting the issues. Visit the Gator TRACS page for more information on how to use the inspection module.
