Chemical Exposures

Steps to take in the event of a chemical exposure.


Eye Splashes:

  • Go to the nearest eye wash station.
  • Immediately flush with gently flowing, potable water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Gently hold eye open to ensure effective rinsing behind eyelids. Remove contact lenses.
  • Seek medical attention as needed.
  • Report incident to supervisor and EH&S by submitting and Injury and Incident Report.
  • All UF employees and approved volunteers must report any exposure to UF’s medical case management provider, AmeriSys, by calling 1-800-455-2079.

Spills & Splashes on Body:

  • Do not attempt to wipe chemicals off clothes. Find the nearest safety shower or sink and alert others for assistance.
  • Flood exposed area with running water for at least 15 minutes.
  • Other individuals providing assistance must dawn appropriate PPE to handle potentially contaminated materials. Do not touch exposed individual with bare hands.
  • Remove contaminated clothes, shoes, jewelry, etc. while rinsing. Individuals assisting must place contaminated clothing in a plastic bag and dispose of as hazardous waste.
  • Seek medical attention as needed.
  • Report incident to supervisor and EH&S by submitting and Injury and Incident Report.
  • All UF employees and approved volunteers must report any exposure to UF’s medical case management provider, AmeriSys, by calling 1-800-455-2079.
  • Review the chemical’s Safety Data Sheet or call Poison Information Center (800) 222-1222 to determine if any delayed/systemic effects could be expected (e.g. phenol).

Medical Emergency

In the event of a life threatening medical emergency, always call 911.
